Jason Cundy reveals Boxing Day nightmare as Peter Ndlovu made him look like he’d ‘had four roast dinners and about three bottles of champagne’

talkSPORT’s Jason Cundy has spoken of his nightmare at Christmas, revealing that one of his worst ever performances happened on December 26.

He assures us this wasn’t down to too many pigs in blankets or a gallon of Bucks Fizz the day before but, instead, a great display from his opponent, Birmingham City’s Peter Ndlovu.

Cundy didn’t have the best of Christmases that yeartalkSPORT

“One of the worst performances of my career happened on Boxing Day. We played Birmingham at home,” Cundy told talkSPORT.

“On Christmas Day, I had a very small glass of champagne. That’s all I had all day. I couldn’t drink in front of my mum and dad.

“There’s no way I would anyway, but I just had a small glass. I was living in London, so I drove up to Ipswich the next day.

“Peter Ndlovu twisted me inside out – my body was like a corkscrew at the end of it!

“He loved a stepover, right? He absolutely tore me all over the park.”

Nobody is doubting that that happened, but Cundy seems to remember scoring an own goal – something which records say didn’t happen!

Looking back through the talkSPORT archives, there was no sign of Cundy putting through his own net against Birmingham on Boxing Day 1997, with the goal being handed to Jon McCarthy instead.

The dubious goals panel has either taken it off the former defender, or he really did have more than a glass of champagne that night!

Cundy recalled: “We only got beat 1-0 but guess who scored the goal – me! It was an own goal, it bounced off my shins!

“If people Ndlovu is listening now, I don’t know how much sleep you got that night but I went to bed early, I had no drink, nothing.

“The next day, honestly, I couldn’t run, I couldn’t breathe, and it looked like I’d had about four roast dinners and about three bottles of champagne, which was not the case.”
