Newcastle have been told they should sign Juventus star Aaron Ramsey and Wolves defender Conor Coady as they look to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The Magpies are relying on their new owners’ cash to improve their squad and save them from returning to the Championship.

They have already spent £15million on Kieran Trippier but Warren Barton, who played at St James’ Park between 1995 and 2002, has told talkSPORT who he believes Eddie Howe‘s side need to bring in to avoid the drop.

Speaking on the White and Jordan show, he said: “I think they would be aware to start looking in the market again. It’s not going to be cheap, they’re sweeping the player pool in Benfica, they’re looking around.

“I would go for him [Aaron Ramsey], I think he’s got a point to prove, when I spoke to Gary Speed a long time ago when he [Ramsey] was 21, Speedo said to me ‘He’s a player, don’t worry about him’.

“He has a great attitude, he works hard in training, he wants to be a leader, I think he’s got a driving force. It didn’t work in Italy, he can come back and I think he’ll have a bit of a chip on his shoulder.”

Ramsey made the move to the Old Lady in 2019, however the midfielder has been hit with a string of injuries limiting his time on the pitch in Italy.

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri confirmed that the 31-year-old, best known for his time at Arsenal, is an ‘outgoing player’, so would be ready and available to sign for Eddie Howe’s side this window.

However the Welsh international was not the only player Barton suggested Newcastle should go in for.

“Here’s another player,” Barton continued, “Conor Coady, I look at someone like him – a leader, organised in the back, versatile.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Coady has been at Molineux since 2015 and been a key part of the side as the central defender in a back-three.

This season, Wolves have only conceded 14 goals, one less than Man City, with Coady at the heart of the backline.

Should either move to the club, they will join former Spurs right-back Trippier on Tyneside as he became Newcastle’s first signing under their new owners last week.

Newcastle face fellow relegation candidates Watford at St James’s Park on Saturday and will want to get back to winning ways after their shock FA Cup loss to Cambridge United.
