Rolling stock manufacturer PESA Bydgoszcz has signed a deal with Stolichen Electrotransport EAD in Sofia to supply the Bulgarian capital with 13 Swing trams. The deal is worth over 98 million zloty (22.8 million euros).

“This contract is part of our strategy, which assumes strengthening our position on those European markets we are already in. Export will be crucial for the future of the company,” said Krzysztof Sędzikowski, PESA’s president and CEO.

The new 30-metre-long Swings are low-floor and air-conditioned, with 41 seats and can accommodate up to 160 standing passengers. They are equipped with a platform for wheelchairs and are adapted for the disabled and visually impaired.

As part of the contract, PESA will also supply spare parts, diagnostic equipment and training.

“The new trams are part of the Integrated Metropolitan Public Transport Phase II project, which is funded under the Regions for Growth 2014-2020 programme, co-funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund,” the mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, wrote on social media.

This is PESA’s third deal with Stolichen Electrotransport. To date PESA has already supplied Sofia with 25 trams, first in 2013 (20 trams) and then an additional five in 2016.

PESA Bydgoszcz is Poland’s largest manufacturer of rail vehicles, it also carries out modernisation, repairs and maintenance of rolling stock.
