Phil Jones has been backed to make England’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar following his brilliant comeback performance against Wolves.

After years of terrible luck with injuries, the 29-year-old made his first Manchester United appearance in 708 days against the Wanderers at Old Trafford and he was a standout performer for his side – despite their 1-0 defeat.

He looked assured at the back and more committed to the cause than any of the Red Devils players, with his display leading to Luke Shaw singing his praises.

Jones has dealt with a series of injuries since his last appearance against Tranmere in the FA Cup in January 2020 and seen big-money arrivals such as Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane usurp him in the pecking order.

He was visibly emotional at full-time of the Old Trafford clash as fans sung his name when he walked off the pitch.

Sports Bar host and Man United fan, Andy Goldstein reckons Jones would have a great shot at going to the World Cup in Qatar in November if he can continue to perform like he did against Wolves.

Now, the 29-year-old has been backed for the World CupGETTY

“I’ll make a statement,” he said. “Phil Jones is going to go to England for the World Cup.

“We’re not blessed with centre-halves. I think there’s a couple centre-halves he’s better than on his day.

“I think he’s better than Mings, and I’d rather have Jones in a back two.

“If Jones carries on like that he’ll be going to the World Cup.

“In his pomp, I think he’s better than John Stones.

“I always worry about John Stones.

“Phil Jones is going to the World Cup.”
