Desmond Tutu, the South African archbishop and a leading figure in bringing about the end of apartheid, has died at the age of 90.

Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his non-violent fight against white minority rule in his country. He also coined the term “Rainbow Nation” to describe South Africa’s diverse population.

“A man of extraordinary intellect, integrity and invincibility against the forces of apartheid, he was also tender and vulnerable in his compassion for those who had suffered oppression, injustice and violence under apartheid, and oppressed and downtrodden people around the world,” South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa said in a press release.
