Aston Villa have announced the signing of midfielder Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona until the end of the season, with an option to buy the Brazilian permanently.

Coutinho’s loan move sets up a reunion with Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard, his former teammate at Liverpool, the club he left to join Spanish giants Barcelona in 2018.

In stark contrast at the time, Coutinho’s new club Aston Villa had been relegated to the Championship, and were desperately fighting for a return to England’s top-flight.
