Defoe has left the Scottish champions after making just two appearances this season and is now a free agent.
Could Defoe still bag goals in the Premier League?GETTY
The 39-year-old had been helping out in a coaching capacity and was part of an interim management team following the departure of Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa.
Former Premier League striker Darren Bent reckons the striker is an ideal short-term replacement for Chris Wood, who is set to join Newcastle for a £20million fee after his release clause was activated.
“I get it he probably wouldn’t go there now, but he’s just left Rangers on a free,” Bent told Drive.
“He’s still as fit as anybody. He wouldn’t go Newcastle because of that Sunderland connection but on a free he could score goals for somebody, even at the age he’s at.
Wood looks set to be Newcastle’s second signing of the January transfer windowGetty
“He’s now 39, he keeps himself in very good shape.
“He ain’t got to start every game but off the bench, he will get you goals.
“Maybe with Chris Wood going to Newcastle, maybe Burnley could get him on a free.”
Defoe joined Rangers, initially on loan, from AFC Bournemouth in the January 2019 transfer window.
The ex-Tottenham and Portsmouth forward netted 32 goals in 74 appearances after joining from Bournemouth, initially on loan, in January 2019.
