Jesse Lingard warned against West Ham return by Jack Wilshere because ‘the grass isn’t always greener’ and Manchester United ‘are still a big club’

Jesse Lingard has been advised NOT return to West Ham United this month on a permanent deal, despite playing just 11 minutes of football under Ralf Rangnick.

The Manchester United midfielder enjoyed a fruitful six-month spell in east London last year, scoring nine goals and finishing with five assists from his 16 Premier League games.

Lingard even managed to earn a recall to the England squad in the process, yet he was unable to claim a place in Gareth Southgate’s final Euro 2020 squad.

The Hammers tried to lure the 29-year-old back to the London Stadium in the summer, yet Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskajer assured him about the amount of game time he would receive at his boyhood club and he stayed.

Despite scoring against Newcastle and even grabbing the winner at West Ham, Lingard’s career at United has again stuttered and the Hammers hold a keen interest once again.

Lingard is out of contract in the summer and can negotiate a pre-contract agreement with clubs in Europe, but Wilshere told the playmaker to consider avoiding leaving Old Trafford as long as he can.

“I think after the six months he had at West Ham, he probably thought he was going to get a chance [at Manchester United]. He probably deserved a chance.

“It’ll be interesting to see what happens this window. He probably deserves to play, he’ll feel he deserves to play.

“The grass ain’t always greener. I had this a few times at Arsenal with players who didn’t want to be there.

“Sometimes you need to sit back and look at how lucky you are to be at a big club like that and the fans…

“All right, they’re not challenging but it’s still a big club and teams go there and are intimidated by that. To be on that side of the fence rather than going to them places makes a massive difference.”
