Man City plot moves for Leeds star Kalvin Phillips and former Barcelona man Marc Cucurella to conclude summer transfer business

Manchester City are targeting Kalvin Phillips and Marc Cucurella as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of next season’s bid for domestic and European glory.

Pep Guardiola’s side wrapped up a sixth Premier league title last month but the wait to seal a first Champions League success goes on having exited the competition in a dramatic semi-final defeat to Real Madrid.

The Athletic reports that Guardiola, who’s already captured Erling Haaland, is targeting two more signings this summer in a bid to claim European club football’s biggest prize next season.

Leeds midfielder Phillips is high on Guardiola’s list of priorities as City look to replace outgoing captain Fernandinho, who has left the club after nine years of service.

Brighton left-back Cucurella is the other name at the top of the Premier League champions’ shopping list having impressed during his first season with the Seagulls.

Leeds’ final day survival heroics may have made City’s quest to obtain the services of England international Phillips a little more challenging as boss Jesse Marsch begins his restructuring of the squad at Elland Road.

The addition of Cucurella might be a little less taxing although Brighton would not be prepared to let the 23-year-old Spaniard leave without a fight.

Cucurella playing a key role in inflicting pain on City’s rivals Manchester United, scoring in Brighton’s 4-0 demolition of the Red Devils in May, will no doubt boost his chances of joining the champions.

City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak has been quick to confirm that there will be new additions to the squad this summer and hopes to get any deals over the line sooner rather than later.

“I can confirm that there will be more players coming in,” Al-Mubarak said this week.

“We will try to go as fast as we can, but it depends on the market. If it was up to me, they would all be done on July 1”

City have bolstered their attacking options with the acquisition of Norwegian striker Haaland with River Plate marksman Juilan Alvarez arriving this summer.

This leaves the futures of Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling firmly in the balance with the Brazilian already unhappy with his lack of game time.

The same can be said of Sterling, who has one year remaining on his current deal, with talks over an extension at a standstill.
