Polish FM: Romania’s EU presidency represents all of CEE

Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz told a press conference on January 9 that he is convinced Romania’s presidency of the Council of the European Union will represent “all of Central and Eastern Europe.”

“Poland will bolster Romania’s presidency in accomplishing important and well established priorities. We are certain that our friends in Romania will respond very well to these challenges, as a spokesman for the Central and Eastern European states that are an integral part of Europe,” said Mr Czaputowicz.

Mr Czaputowicz was speaking in the Romanian capital Bucharest, where an official ceremony to mark the beginning of Romania’s presidency will be held on January 10. Donald Tusk, the Polish president of the European Council, as well as Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, will also attend.

A number of Romanian opposition groups, unhappy with the government’s soft stance on corruption, have announced that they will hold demonstrations during the event.
