World No. 1 Simona Halep (27) has ended a successful first round at Australian Open, after beating Estonian Kaia Kanepi (33) – final score 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2.

This was Halep’s first win of the year after a long break due to a back injury and a loss in the first round of the Sydney International last week.

Halep had a tough opponent in Kanepi, who has also had some physical issues in recent months, but eliminated Halep in straight sets in the first round of the US Open last year.

Simona Halep still does not have a coach after ending her collaboration with Australian Darren Cahill, but she has said that she would continue on her own for the first few months of the year before she tries to find a new coach.
