Romanian tennis champion Simona Halep survived a showdown against American player Sofia Kenin – 6-3 7-6(5) 6-4 – to move on to the third round of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Halep was a finalist at the tournament in 2018 and will play the next match against Venus Williams.

The Romanian player said after the match: “I have no idea how I won tonight. It’s so hard to explain what happened on court. She played amazing. I got a little bit injured in the 2nd set but I just fought because I wanted to win and play again in front of you.”
