Poland to Enforce Tougher Rules on Organic Food

Poland is to enforce tougher rules on organic food from 2021, to encourage a higher quality of produce and to increase production.

The new policy follows a reform of EU rules on the organic farming system, which must still be formally approved by the Council of EU Ministers. These changes will ensure food from non-EU countries follows EU standards, with on-site checks promised – a method Bartosz Pytlak from Poland’s agriculture ministry claimed would result in “lower costs for the producers of certified organic food.”

The news comes after Carrefour Poland signed agreements with seven Polish fruit and vegetable producers to increase its supply of fresh produce.

The Polish organic food market is worth around 900 million zloty.
