Speaker of the Ukrainian parliament Andrey Paruby has said that Ukraine stands a good chance of joining the European Union between 2025 and 2027.

Mr Paruby’s statement comes after the speakers of the parliaments of Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine signed a joint resolution during the an inter-parliamentary assembly in Kyiv.

“It was very important for us that the action plan we have agreed on includes [the provisions] that we will adhere to the 2025-2027 strategy. This is a strategic plan for Ukraine’s path towards the EU,” the speaker said.

Mr Paruby added that the upcoming Polish and Lithuanian presidencies of the Council of the EU will provide the two countries with an opportunity to drive the EU’s agenda.

The speaker of Ukraine’s parliament also expressed his hopes that the Polish and Lithuanian governments would continue advocating for not just extended, but tougher sanctions against Russia over its annexation of Crimea and role in the crisis in eastern Ukraine.
